Absolut is doing an Absolut Original Exhibition here in Dublin during the Fringe Festival. It is being curated by The Small Print. I was fortunate enough to be invited to submit a piece which is very exciting.

The brief was pretty loose and the only stipulation was to take inspiration from the bottle...so it was perfect for me to go crazy with all things pink, sweet and girly. Here are some behind the scenes (dodgy phone pics) of myself and food stylist Sharon Hearne Smith prop sourcing. Guiney's is a great spot, we sourced loads of fake flowers and lovely pink bedspreads that I stapled to the wall and with the help of a friend Florian, covered buttons and sewed them on to make the padded background. I will post the final image soon.

I was really deighted to open my inbox and find an email from Creative Review to say that I had been selected for their 2009 Photography Annual again this year....the pressure is now on for 2010. The annual comes out in October. Last year I was away and unfortunately wasn't able to attend the launch in London but I'm definitely going to head over this year and have a nice break in London with lots of cake, galleries and a sneeky trip to Liberty.I'll post more about it in October.

Rankin

Southstudios had the privilege of doing a Q&A with Rankin...photographer to the stars. Myself and Yvette from the studio opened the Q&A, public speaking can be bit terrifying but we got through it. Rankin was over in Ireland launching his new exhibition Cheka Kidogo in conjunction with Oxfam. Big thanks to Claire Quinlan from Oxfam and G-Face for the photos. The event was recorded so hopefully when it's edited I will be able to post it here.....that is if it's not too mortifying!

The Dry Crunchy Californian Central Valley

Here are a few pics from the Californian Central Valley. It was amazingly dry and has a massive agricultural industry which uses vast amounts of artificial irrigation. As it was only April when we were there it wasn't as hot and dry as it gets, it can get up to 104F, you see "rain for rent" signs everywhere....grand in California...in Ireland...no thanks.

I'm back from a great trip. I took this shot on the road into L.A. what a mental city, it was hot, hot, hot. We did lots of touristy things and hanging out but I think the best discovery was the bar Tiny K.O.s, it has the best juke box in the world, if you're in L.A. put it on your list. I'll post more pics from the trip during the week.....bye!

Myself and Aisling Farinella were shooting together last week, we both wanted to keep it quite loose and when we were heading into the countryside we didn't have a definite plan. I was inspired by photographs my dad took of my mam in the 70's. They were shots like any couple have where they just hop out of the car on a drive and their lady/gentleman takes a snap of them, that's pretty much what we did. Aisling chose some brilliant pieces that popped against the rugged landscape.

It was bloody freezing so I took two giant flasks of tea and coffee, my MSR, some Rich Tea (can't beat the Rich Tea) and a hot water bottle....all pretty low key! Niamh K from 1st option was a super sport, I have to say she was a delight to work with and didn't let the cold stop here doing her thing.

I got asked to do a very funny photshoot for OK magazine (NYC). The NBC Today Show were filming in Ireland for St Patricks day and I got to go and photograph the Al Roeker and Meriedeth Viera on a sheep farm in Wicklow. They were trying to learn how to herd sheep from Pat the farmer who was the most unique and amusing character, they couldn't have cast a better farmer!

The sheep were so cute and two little babies had been born that morning and they named them Al and Meriedeth. Pat the farmer will be seeing a lot more of me I tell ya, I'll be back. You can watch it here.

Crufts Woof!

So travel light was the name of the game. I have never travelled to the airport with such a small amount of luggage I am a "why bring one pair of sparkly shoes when you can bring 4?" kinda girl so it felt very strange going to Birmingham for Crufts with just a camera, my phone and some baby wipes for dog slober.

Wow what an event....they sure like their dogs at Crufts. They take it pretty seriously, I went for the Toy and Utility day and they were pretty pampered pooches.

Okay so I haven't been an A1 blogger really of late. It keeps getting put to the bottom of the list but I'll make a bigger effort now to get my bootie in gear. I have been doing lots of fun bits lately so hopefully I will get a chance to get some of them up here.

I feel a distinct sense of summer in the air and very excited about shooting lots of pretty summer clothes and getting motoring of some of my new projects. Bring on the Summer!

Quigleys Bakery

Distant memories of holliers

My trip to Tokyo feels like a gazillion years ago, I was trawling through pics the other day and remembered that I didn't post that many pics from the trip on my blog. So here are a random bunch, mostly taken in Nikko which is 140km from Tokyo. Tokyo and Nikko are like two different worlds. The Japanese visit Nikko to see the amazing shrines, I didn't take too many pictures of the shrines I was more interested in the Japanese being the best tourists in Japan and the faded glory of a tourist town.

I just got my EBS Calendar in the post today. 12 Irish photographers were asked to submit and image and a small pargraph on what family means to them, what I really like about it is that each photographer's image is so completely different to the next yet they all represent family. The concept and design was done by Studio AAD.

I built this set using photographs of my family, toys and books that have been around my parents house for years, I really wanted to have a glowy warm feel to the image and that's why I used this retro artificial fire, a style that was in so many houses when I was growing up.

Pick up a copy if you can and have a look at all the photos and paragraphs it really makes for a lovely read with a little cup of tea and a biscuit.

U Magazine

I did a fun shoot with Sarah Rickard some time back for U Magazine but it's only out now. It was for the Christmas Special and all about New Years Eve party dressing. I get dizzy sometimes at Christmas seeing all that sparkle, it is the only time of year that you think it is okay to dress up as a Christmas Tree. For the shoot stylist Sarah Rickard knew that metallic was really good but National Lampoon's wasn't. You can see some pics from behind the scenes some posts back.

The Christmas issue of Easy Food has lots of easy Christmas treats for you to make. They have a feature of the staff at Easy Food and how they like to celebrate Christmas, what they like to eat and secret tips. Gina Miltiadou (Co founder of Zahra Publishing with John Mullins) and Emma Parkin (Editor) were all hands on deck at the shoot before the rest of the Easy Food crew came along and ate every bit of the leftovers.

Finally Christmas is nearly upon us. Lots of Christmas shoots that I worked on in August are starting to appear now. August! that was ages ago. When we were doing the shoots I thought that Christmas would be ruined and that I wouldn't be able to get excited about Santa or anything when the real one came around....but I was so wrong.

Here is some work from the new Superquinn Savour Magazine which I worked on with Sharon Hearne Smith (Food stylist), Hugo Arnold (Prism Publishing) and assited by Aoife Herrity. Below is a quick canapes recipe.

Parma Ham and Fig Crostini
1 slice of parma ham per person
Half fig per person
A little icing sugar
Olive Oil
1 Stick french bread
1 Bunch watercress thich stems removed

Thinly slice the bread, drizzle with olive oil and grill or bake in a preheated oven, 200c/gas mark 6, for about 5 minutes, watch it like a hawk as they burn wasily. Allow to cool. These will stay crisp for a few hours as long as they are allowed to cool without steaming.

Preheat the grill. Slice the figs into 6-8 thin slices and arrange on a non stick backing sheet. Dust the icing sugar over lightly and grill for 2-3 minutes until softened and carmelised. Leave to cool completely.

To assemble, arrange the crostini on a serving platter. Arrange a little watercress on each one. Tear the parma ham into 3/4 pieces and arrange on top. Lay a carmelised fig slice over and VOILA!

Well what can I say, myself and Sharon Hearne Smith went to the launch of The Yellow Door cookbook last weekend in Northern Ireland and what a welcome we received. Food and booze to beat the band, that Yellow Door crowd sure know how to to put on a good show. The book is out now and it is really lovely. The design is great and the recipes are yum-yummy.

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness of Prostate Cancer across Ireland. The money raised by Movember will be donated to Action Prostate Cancer - an initiative of the Irish Cancer Society. As part of the event people involved in photography, illustration, painting etc. were asked to submit a piece related to Movember and to be auctioned off in aid of the charity.

This is my submission, I made jumbo moustaches out of fake fur and gave the trees nice tweed scarves to keep them cosy as it was very cold when I was shooting. I was tempted to leave them there, it was very funny seeing the reactions of people passing by.

National Ploughing Championships

So elegant and eating chips, my kind of lady

I was driving back from a 2 day job in Nenagh when I saw the big sign for the National Ploughing Championships...it was my lucky day as the next day was the last day of the championship. So I headed home to Dublin and had a few hours sleep. The next day I got up, donned my hiking boots and made my way down to Kilkenny to what can only be described as the Electric Picnic for farmers.

What an amazing event, so many tractors! Who'd have thought that lamborghini made tractors! Ceilís in fields with ladies dancing with ladies. Grandad's being brought up for the day with their families. Brothers who have been attending for decades together. People in their Sunday best and 150,000 attendees. I could go on but I won't if you're interested plans are already being made for 2009 and it's a bit closer to home in Kildare. See you there I'll be the one dressed head to toe in John Deere gear and wellies with a camera.

Nikko nearing night

I was a lucky lady and headed to Tokyo for my hols. What an amazing city! Crazy and bizarre, so interesting socially and culturally and pretty incredible shopping to boot. I wanted to go to Tokyo for years and finally I got to go in October. I was in snap happy heaven.

I wanted to see some of Japan away from Tokyo so we headed to Nikko. Nikko is located in the mountains 140km north of Tokyo. It is quite a sleepy town, very different to Tokyo, the town itself visually wouldn't be considered that beautiful but the location in the mountains is stunning and the ancient shrines, scenic trails and sites are just like a still from "Crouching Tiger".

I took these images just between dusk and nightfall, you can probably telll how sleepy it is! Over the next while I'll upload more images from my trip.

Lisa Hannigan Sea Sew

I got my copy of Lisa Hannigan's album "Sea Sew" today, it's great as you would expect if you have ever heard Lisa's lovely voice. I did the photography for the album a while ago, Lisa embroidered all the lyrics on the album onto cloth for the photographs, now that is dedication! Lisa is currently on tour in the States doing a huge amount of dates so if your Stateside you should check her out. Designers Conor&David did the final artwork and here it is....ta-da!

I received an invite to the launch of the cookbook I worked on with Sharon Hearne Smith for the Yellow Door in Portadown and Belfast. The recipes are from Simon Doegon who is a very talented chef so I can't wait to go up with Sharon on the 22nd and eat lots of canapes and drink a cocktail or two. I will post the book here as soon as I get my grubby mitts on it...very exciting!

I love it when I get a call from Zara or Leonard from Queen Beauty Emporium to do a shoot because I know it is going to be fun, fun, fun! They aren't afraid to do something new which is brilliant and we always get to work together as a great team with Christine Lucignano doing Makeup and Alison Coneelly styling with some of her own creations. We decided to do quite a dramatic shoot in comparison to the nice quiet one we did with Carmel from 1st Option a while ago which I posted on the blog.

The shoot is going to be printed in Creative Head magazine.

Well my posting has been a bit erratic of late what with general busy-ness. I have lots and lots of things to post about which I will do over the next few weeks, I also have images from my trip to Tokyo which was amazing!

I did another Christmas shoot on Friday with super stylist Sarah Rickard, I thought we would be near the end of the Christmas shoots since I've been shooting them since the start of August! We had lots of fun and the amazingly hard working model Baiba played a blinder.

Candy Karaoke

The guys from Candy put on a great show at Monstertruck, it was called Candy Karaoke and 70 artists were asked to interpret an existing album cover. I chose Aladdin Sane by David Bowie and I also photographed Aisling Farinella's entry Laurie Anderson "Big Science". Pop along if you're in town there are lots of really great and interesting pieces. Belfast Print Finishers

I submitted a piece for a promotional book for Belfast Print Finishers, I don't know when it is going to be out. I shot this shot a while back in Palermo, I just did a four year exposure on my old 10d, it's quite noisy because the 10d wasn't as sophisticated in low light situations as the new Canons are but I quite like the noise.

Vodafone Icecream

I got to do a really fun shoot with DDFHB for Vodafone. Sharon worked her magic with the fake icecream, we had lots of fun layering the icecream up with lots and lots of toppings, it looked yummy but it was totally fake, they ended up using the "neat" one. They are dotted around the city at the moment.

Midlands

Sorry for not updating my blog in so long, it all started with good intentions but then work kind of took over. I'll try and update it a bit more regularly.

A few weeks back I took a little trip to Sligo for the bank holiday and we stopped off at a petrol station to get icecreams and I saw this scene, I thought it looked like an outdoor stage with curtains. I used my old Hasselblad which is so bloody amazing, I have to get her out more often. The dude sitting on the chair was super chilled and wasn't even remotely phased when a big artic swung into the carpark and nearly creamed me, I didn't actually notice it either (too busy trying to focus), Chris only told me yesterday what had happened...oh the drama!

The Holga's big day out in Wicklow

My friends Yvette and Seán gave me a gift of a Holga for my Birthday and I love, love it! It's like a Fisher Price toy, I'm a bit of a weedy girl so it nice to have a super light camera that you can just throw in your handbag.

I'm getting back in to film again using different cameras I accumulated over the years but the Holga is flavour of the month at the moment, the element of suprise with the light leaks is great because you never know how they're going to come out. These shots were from the sunny May bank holiday weekend. Big walks in Wicklow, my Fisher Price camera and Mr Whippy icecreams, perfect.

New Food and Wine

Just got my copy of Food and Wine in the post, it was an editorial on tapas. A bit of a meatfest but nice and summery, if you fancy giving it a go.

Valencia rice with squid and mussels and clams

1kg mussels, cleaned and scrubbed (or 50/50 mussels & clams)

olive oil

750g squid, cleaned and cut into tablespoon-size pieces
salt and pepper
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
400g Valencia rice (alternatively medium grain)
1 400g tin chopped tomatoes
1 litre chicken stock, simmering
pinch of saffron (threads or powder), dissolved in a little hot water
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
2 lemons, halved

METHOD: Put the mussels into a saucepan over a medium heat with the lid on and shake well. The mussels take four to five minutes to open. Remove the lid and set the mussels aside to cool. Heat four tablespoons of olive oil in a casserole dish. Season the cuttlefish with salt and saute for five minutes. Add the garlic and and rice and stirring, saute for two minutes before adding the tomatoes and the hot stock, bring back to the boil, stir once and simmer for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile remove the mussel shells, leaving a dozen or so for decoration. Any mussels that have not opened should be discarded. Strain the liquor from the saucepan, taking care to leave any grit behind. Add the strained liquor and the mussels along with the saffron to the rice two minutes before the end. Check seasoning, stir in the parsley and serve with a wedge of lemon.

I love when I find a roll of unprocessed film in a drawer or hanging out in an old shoe. I was in my folks when I found this roll. I went to the lab to collect the film and contact sheet today and I got that lovely sensation of anticipation that you get with film. I hadn't a clue what was on the film and I was so happy to have a record of a really fun night from about 4 years ago in Galway at a Warlords of Pez and Chalets (R.I.P) gig. Obviously it was a fancy dress thing. I shot the roll on my Contax T2, which is a lovely little camera.

I'm sure I'll find lots more rolls from the days of photography poverty, when you can buy the film but can't afford to go to the lab!

Dundrum Town Centre contract editorial

I picked up a copy of the new Dundrum Town Centre contract magazine. I was commissioned to do the below editorial for the magazine, we shot it in studio as it was raining outside and I used some hard lighting to replicate a bit of sun because well, it's nice to do that because we don't get too much of it naturally.

The Broncolor Boys

I bought a lot of Broncolor gear just before Christmas after using them at a lighting workshop in Switzerland, nerdy I know but it was love at first sight. They are a really interesting range of lighting, I was using Bowens for years and fancied a change.

Alan and Craig from Broncolor popped over today to say "hi" and also give a demo on some of the unique features of the equipment. After they left myself and my assistant Aoife had a bit of a mess about before setting up for tomorrow's shoot. Here is a shot of the super Aoife doing a bit of modelling.

Interview Magazine

I received a large package today from Interview Magazine in NY. I did a portrait of the actress Sarah Bolger (In America, The Spiderwick Chronicles) for the magazine and they kindly sent me a bunch of mags. We shot it down in Greenan Farm in Wicklow, yet again it was freezing!

Irish Tatler Editorial & Cover

Picked up the new copy of Irish Tatler today, a shot from the editorial I did with the team made the cover which is brill. We shot it down in Carlow in February and it was very cold. The location was amazing and full of character, we brought quite a few props with us including 100 rossetes, we used about 20.

We flew the model, Morvah in from London and it was her first time in Ireland she was picked up from the airport at 11.00 at night and was driven down to the middle of nowhere, did the shoot, ate Tayto, drank tea and flew home.

Another day, another food shoot

Okay, so today I did another food shoot styled by Sharon Hearne Smith. Now there's a main course to cook before yesterday's Eton Mess.

It was a pretty funny day, we were shooting on location in a house in South Co. Dublin, when we got there we were greeted by a poor sad dog who had just been neutered and in the corner of the sitting room there was a cage with "Rascal" the pet rat in the corner. Oh the glamour of it all!

Chicken fried noodles

400g boned chicken thighs, roughly chopped
1 dessertspoon dry sherry
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
1 teaspoon cornflour
450g noodles
sesame oil
vegetable oil
2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped
3cm piece of ginger, peeled and finely chopped
8 button mushrooms, thinly sliced
250g beansprouts
1 cucumber, deseeded and thinly sliced
bunch coriander, roughly chopped
4 scallions, thinly sliced
2 fresh red chillies, thinly sliced

Combine the meat with the sherry, soy and cornflour. Mix well and set aside for 30 minutes. Cook the noodles according to the instructions on the packet, drain , plunge into cold water and drain. Toss in a tablespoon of sesame oil and set aside.

Heat two tablespoons of vegetable oil in a frying pan or wok and add the garlic, ginger and mushrooms, stir-fry for 30 seconds and then add the meat mixture. Stir fry for two minutes and then add the noodles and a tablespoon or two of chicken stock or water. Stir-fry for a further two minutes, or until the chicken is cooked. Add the beansprouts and cucumber, heat through and serve on four plates with a sprinkling of coriander, scallions and chilli.

I've been doing food shoots for years and always say "I'll make that this weekend" of course that never happens so I've decided to share some of the recipes with you so you can win over your pals. Hopefully it will give you an idea of the shoots I work on by showing behind the scenes as well as the final shots.

I spent the day in Glenageary today shooting for Food and Wine Magazine. Food stylist Sharon Hearne Smith cooked lots of tasty food, my favourite being the Eton Mess (which we ate quite a bit of- only 22 calories a portion ;) I chose this one also because it's super easy!

RECIPE FOR ETON MESS
200ml Whipping Cream
4 Meringues (roughly broken)
500gm Strawberries
Light Brown Sugar
Strawberry Coulis (Optional)

Whip the cream and spoon over broken meringues. Scatter over strawberries (and coulis if desired) and dust with sugar. Serve in large bowl or individual jars.

Possibly the first evening of the Summer!

Went out for a nice long walk this evening and I took a few shots to open my blog with, the weather was lovely and sunny but kind of cold. I forgot my mittens so my hands nearly dropped off but it was still very pleasant.

Hotel Ballymun

From 31st of March to the 27th of April 2007 the top floor of the Clarke Tower, one of the last remaining tower blocks in Ballymun, opened its doors to the public in the form of a unique short stay hotel 'Hotel Ballymun'.

Artist Seamus Nolan was commissioned by Breaking Ground, the Ballymun Regeneration per cent for art scheme, to undertake a new work in this changing suburb of Dublin.

I was approached by furniture designer Jonathan Legge to do a fashion Editorial for the Irish Times to promote the hotel.

Editorial in Candy Magazine This month's Candy magazine features a fashion shoot entitled 'World Piece'. The photo shoot was taken exclusively for Candy in Dublin. Make up was done by the soon to be Vegas bride Looch christinelucignano.com, hair by Zara Cox and styling by aislingfarinella.com and last but not least photographic assisting by Aoife Herrity.
